Space is expensive. What can help when preparing orders?
Linde Material Handling’s Product Manager explains what can be done to speed up order picking in warehouses. According to an article from the server simplexity.news, it is necessary to perceive the constantly growing segment of e-commerce, as well as the rising prices of storage space and the lack of employees. “One of the cost-effective and easily scalable solutions is to rent equipment during periods of peak demand,” says Matthias Holzwarth, for example.
The expert considers the scalability of goods, the interconnection of systems that constantly generate data in warehouses, and the use of reliable picking structures to be the biggest problems in the logistics of current warehouses. “In order to get more storage space, warehouses have to either increase the floor area or build the shelves to a higher height. Another interesting approach is to increase storage density by using very narrow aisles (often around 1.8m wide),” Holzwarth writes, noting that they can use vehicles capable of moving forwards and backwards on controlled routes.
In aisles with normal width, it is advisable to use assistance systems when passing vehicles, and in case of uneven floors, choose vehicles with active suspension. This will make it possible to maintain the same driving performance even on an uneven surface.
When it comes to safety, the best-known solutions include the marking of zones for the movement of vehicles and people, with coloured stripes on the ground. Parking assistance systems for vehicles and a rescue alarm for picking orders from great heights are also essential. A number of companies have introduced sensors that identify unusual operator behaviour, such as prolonged immobility, which will alert people in the surroundings with a loud sound.
“I am sure that we will see a higher density of storage and an increase in the height of the shelves for storing goods. For many companies, flexibility will be the key to overcoming the economic challenges of recent months, and coping with uncertainty about the future. One cost-effective and easily scalable solution is to rent equipment during periods of peak demand,” concludes Holzwarth.
